Last summer, Blue Apple had a set of wonderful interns that did a great job learning about different aspects of business, social media as well as website development and design. Here is a post by Steve Korchynsky

“This past summer I had the wonderful experience of interning with Blue Apple Productions. This was the first time that the company was offering an internship program. There were four interns in total: Social Media Manager, Web Developer, Graphic Designer, and Sales and Business Development Intern. I worked as the Sales and Business Development Intern.

The position I held was part-time and required me to come in two to three days a week. I worked in conjunction with the Vice President of Relationship Development, Greg Irwin. I was able to see first-hand how the company operates, and gain a deep understanding of the party rental industry.

The first project I worked on was the company’s summer movie series. The outdoor movie showings throughout the summer were offered free of charge to community members. I first worked to promote the events through various news websites, newspapers, and online event listing sites. I also created physical signs to be present at the events to attract individuals passing by.

Considering the events were being offered for free, Blue Apple Productions looked to underwrite some of the costs by finding local sponsors that would contribute and be given advertising space on the blow up outdoor movie screen. I worked to research different local businesses that might be interested in sponsoring the events targeted toward families with young children. I made calls, and personally set meetings with business owners to discuss the opportunity. The personal selling experience that I gained from this project was great; there were about two weeks when I was in contact with potential sponsors trying to gain their support.”

“Another project I worked on was streamlining the company’s booking and billing process. I gained experience using the accounting software QuickBooks and was able to help aid the new invoicing procedure.

I also ended up doing many different activities that aided in the smooth operation of the company. I was able to contribute and gain an understanding of almost every aspect of the business from the strategic side, to the actual physical event administration.

Blue Apple Productions is full of smart, friendly individuals. I enjoyed my time working with each and every one of them. The company has been successful, and is growing. It was great to be a part of the team helping to foster this growth; my work was relevant, and I could see it.

I would recommend interning with Blue Apple Productions because it is a young company and the experience working as part of it can help build your business knowledge and skill set as well as helping the company grow.”

It has been 10 years since we have made major updates to the Blue Apple [...]

It has been 10 years since we have made major updates to the Blue Apple website. 2011 is the year. We have some spectacular interns this summer and two of them are specifically working on completely redesigning our website. We have a website designer working on graphics and videos while our website designer is programming and learning about a new platform he doesn’t have much experience with at this point.

Our website was originally built by a third party design company. They did a fantastic job and the website was still very functional and stood the test of time. But a lot has changed in website design in the past 10 years and we decided it was a good idea to update ourselves with the time. When we were looking at what to do with our website, we took some time to look at other websites to see what they were doing and what we liked as well as what we did not like.

What we found was that our website needed to be cleaner and more efficient. Our previous website had a lot of information on it all in the same spot and it was very busy. We learned that white space is not a bad thing for the eye as it allows people to focus on what is important such as products or where they are trying to get on your website. A great example of this is Google – they actually have a staff member dedicated to keeping their homepage clean. This makes it easy for people to use it. They are not bombarded with ads and other images or links that takes the users eye away from where they actually want to go, the search box.

Another aspect we wanted to change on our website was efficiency. While we were navigating other websites, we found it was very easy to not only find what we wanted, but we didn’t have to go far or click a bunch of times to get to the page we were looking for. Think your web browsers auto-fill functionality. You only have to type part of the work or URL and it predicts what you are going to type so you don’t waste time typing out the whole thing. On our website, we don’t have auto-fill functionality, however we have made it fewer clicks to get to where you want to go.

We hope you enjoy the new website and if you have any feedback, please feel free to contact us. We are always happy to hear feedback on our business, an event, or our website.
